[Permanently Closed] Superfine KL ~ Seventeen Mall, Section 17, PJ

There are just times that I don't want to highlight a place and want to keep it all to myself because the food is too good to be shared - Superfine.kl is one of those times.

During the first visit, my order of Chilli Scrambled Eggs was mind blowing from the fragrant chilli-flavored eggs on top of a perfectly toasted slice of sourdough to the milky seared paneer on the side. This vegetarian dish didn't look like it would fill me up but it turned out more than enough with the well thought-out ratio of protein to carbs to greens.

The Pastrami Ruben was also delicious, even the beets in the sandwich didn't make me change my mind.

On a more recent visit, I went for the Ottolenghi, another vegetarian dish made of roasted portobellos on a garlicky hummus served with toasted sourdough. Again, it doesn't look like much but it turned out to be a satisfying and filling meal that I could not finish.

The sourdough was perfectly toasted, I could just eat lots of sourdough toast all on its own.

[Permanently Closed] Kheng Wah Bin Teng ~ Megah Rise Mall, PJ

A new char chan teng has joined the Megah Rise Mall food lineup! During my visit, it had been barely been a month since their opening there and even though service is swift, their table queueing system is not clear and straightforward, best ask the servers for instructions.

My fried rice with pork chop doesn't look like much but every part of it was tasty. Well marinated pork chop, egg fried rice with wok hei and the sad looking fried egg seemed to have been fried on the same vessel as other tasty items so it took on savory flavors.

I rarely come across baked char siew buns, especially those in the polo bun style. Kheng Wah's was delicious with a crunchy top and a soft fluffy interior. No regrets ordering this!

Cham is my go-to at char chan tengs and the tea here had a slight floral flavor that lifted and lightened the flavors of the usually kaw and intense Cham.

[Permanently Closed] Yeap ~ Happy Garden, Section 17 PJ

Calm and cozy on 初四 (Chor 4), Yeap was a lovely space for delicious coffee and pastries.

The salted caramel mille crepe was just the right amount of sweetness and the matcha croissant, the perfect bitterness in flakey buttery pastry though we never quite figured out what the little Lego block was.

For the gram, there's lots of natural sunlight and something pretty at every corner but don't let that be the only reason to visit.

JWC, The Factory 30 ~ Johor

Visited Just Want Coffee, The Factory 30 during a recent Johor trip and was overall impressed.

Their mains were a decent portion - my chicken chorizo with sourdough turned out larger than expected and was somewhat like a grazing platter.

The Classic Cold Brew (Milk Coffee) had a pleasant and enjoyable flavor, nutty, toasty and slightly chocolatey.

The desserts however turned out too sweet for our liking and even though the tiramisu was coated with lots of cocoa powder, couldn't dull the overall sweetness.

I would be back for the food and the coffee, definitely the coffee.

The Bread Bar ~ TTDI

True to its name, The Bread Bar has bar vibes and long bar counters minus the alcohol but instead serves sandwiches, pastries and coffee.

The foccacia with pesto, ricotta, ham and sundried tomato striked the perfect balance between salt, acidity, creaminess with a hint of green between very toasted slices of foccacia. Even without sides, it was a filling sandwich and a decent portion.

The corned beef sandwich had a smoky beef flavor, again a nice balance of salt, cheese and with the slight acidity of the mustard, was absolutely delicious. And as you can see, it's a really thicc sandwich.

The breads are overall flavorful, a nice bouncy texture though the crusts are typically hard. Don't eat in big bites or risk poking your palette with sharp pokey bread crust.

I loved the almond croissant, the inside filled with a custard, on top, almond flakes and frangipane. Perfectly buttery and flakey, I'd reckon the rest of their laminated pastries would be as good.

Coffee was a dark roast and tasted toasty.

Chiang Jiang White Coffee ~ Ipoh

Chiang Jiang kopi and teh from Ipoh is pretty commonly used among Ipoh specialty food shops in Klang Valley namely Ipoh Ipoh in Chow Yang SS2. My first taste of it then definitely made an impression and became a must-try in Ipoh.

Their first kopitiam is located on Jalan Windsor and over time, they expanded to 2 shops on the same road. At 3.30 pm on a weekday, the kopitiam was full with plenty of people on their tea break.

The teh ais is too intense and sweet to be consumed on its own but is perfect on ice. Don't let that small aluminium cup fool you, it's potent. The mix of condensed and evaporated milk leaves a nice aftertaste lingering on the tongue and the tea, fragrant.

A kaya butter toast appeared at every table without fail and I can see why. They're generous with the butter so you get a good balance of creamy butter and sweet kaya, rich and sinful.

The golden beach toast is like roti kok, the crispy butter and sugar toast but Chiang Jiang's version has bread which is crisp on the outside but with a fluffy and pillowy center.

At the shop, they have their kopi in 3-in-1, 2-in-1 and kopi-o prepacks and are also available at other shops around Ipoh. Prices vary from shop to shop and it seems to be cheaper at Sin Eng Heong downtown.

Bray Bakery ~ Menara See Hoy Chan, KL

Lamb in a sandwich is an uncommon offering so I ordered the Spiced Lamb Sandwich. The lamb was tender, flavorful and didn't have gamey smell. Flavors were very balanced in the sandwich and there was a good ratio of meat to vegetable to toasty bread, an absolute delight.

The Fried Masala Chicken open toast was great as well, there's just enough spice on the crispy, well-fried chicken.

The sides of truffle-candied wedges and corn salad is a must order if it doesn't already come with your meal.

They weren't kidding when they said candied wedges. The thinnest layer of truffled caramel? and a sprinkling of parmesan coats the wedges creating an almost shattering candy-like glaze, delicious and fascinating. The corn salad was well dressed and brightens up the palate for you to dive into more rich & sinful food.

As I already had a coffee, I opted for a 65% Venezuela Chocolate with sea salt. Rich, lovely and creamy.

Undoubtedly one of the best cafes in the Klang Valley for their unique delicious food creations.

The best of the matcha & coffee world at ONO ~ SS2 PJ

ONO, the best of both the matcha and coffee world is located in PJ with a sleek looking space.

Their signature 'When Two Worlds Collide' is a combination of thick creamy matcha plus a tangy fruity carbonated coffee. I'm not a fan of coffee with a lot of acidity but this combination was absolutely delicious! The coffee was almost carbonated-fruit-juice-like but retained some bitterness and the fragrance of coffee. Very enjoyable.

To eat, the Buffalo Chicken sando had a really strong tang and garlicky flavor which kinda overpowered the rest of the flavors. The chicken however was perfectly crisp and moist. The shokupan had the perfect density, bounce and softness. Overall a good sandwich.

The matcha french toast however was a little lost on me as the eggy matcha infused coating doesn't retain much matcha flavor and the bread is too fresh (which is bad for a french toast) and didn't crisp up. But the coffee infused cream it was served with was delicious. The price tag that comes with the dish can be quite a shocker too.

Of course, the coffee and matcha drinks are good here. The colombia filter coffee was sour but had a nice aftertaste. Would be enjoyable for coffee drinkers who like the sour profile.

Matcha lattes here are obviously excellent and a crowd favorite. The matcha intensity and richness of the milk were well balanced.

A lovely space to cater to coffee and non-coffee drinkers with the only downside of closing too early at 5.30pm.

Brew & Bread, Wisma MCA, Jalan Ampang

Incredibly warm and friendly staff make you feel instanyly welcomed at Brew & Bread. There aren't many seats downstairs as their main dining area is in the loft area just above so make your way up to the higher vantage point and have a meal while watching the world go by. The turnover of seats was rather quick at lunch time on a Monday so we didn't wait very long to be seated.

To start, the latte had a very nutty flavor with a smokey crema. Definitely my type of coffee.

The croissant was perfectly flakey and buttery on the inside even if it didn't look like the typical croissant. Looks aside, it was delicious.

The double boiled mushroom soup had a sweet aftertaste probably from the cream but was hearty and had a strong mushroom flavor.

The ayam pongteh was a little too tender as it slid right off the bone. But overall, the flavors were good.

The truffle carbonara & bacon brisket was incredibly rich and creamy. The pasta was perfectly al dente for me (but probably not for Italians). I'm glad I wasn't greedy and ordered large filling sides cause the pasta itself was very filling.

Although the menu seems rather small - just a handful each of rice bowls, brunch items and pasta items but all the dishes were executed well. I'm glad I managed to pay them a visit.
